Skeeter Farm was started in 2009 by three new farmers, Amy, Hannah and Jamie. For the first two years, the farm was located on a small, isolated piece of land leased to us by the City of Abbotsford. Although the Abbotsford farm was beautiful, there were many challenges including no access to electricity or clean water, heavy clay soils and enough mosquitos to make one think they had died and gone to Northern Ontario (hence the name, Skeeter Farm).
In 2011, the farm partially changed farmership/ownership as well as moved to a new, much more pleasant and productive farm in Yarrow (near Chilliwack). Patrick, Amanda and Amy now farm together on land leased to us by the Fraser Valley Duck and Goose Farm.
We produce a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and flowers on 3 acres of lovely sandy soils out in Yarrow. We practice natural growing principles to produce food for folks which means: no herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers or other inputs not approved for use in certified organic production. Okay, not totally true, some seed that we use is not certified organic, but we do our best to buy the organic seed when it’s available and we never use GMO seed. We also dabble with saving our own seed, which we know is more and more important for farmers to do these days. We do most of everything by hand with the help of a few tools like a small tractor, wheel hoe and cool push seeder.
